One major downside to being a machinist is that it generally is viewed to take 10-12 years to become a "master machinist." this is very off putting to a lot of people but for many it makes the reward that much greater. once you get really good you will feel very proud due to the fact that there was so much you had to learn to get where you are. Also, the time put into mastering the trade is somewhat offset by how low the requirements for entry level positions are. Generally, the only requirement to get an entry level position (while low paying at first) is a highschool diploma. This site has entry level positions available with no experience required starting at 17 dollars an hour.
