I chose to talk about being a machinist for my blog for the simple fact that I am one. I've been working in the field for over 4 years now and have learned a lot, but there is still a lot more to learn. In fact, this is one of those industries where you will never stop learning due to advances in technology and the sheer vastness of the information that is already out there to learn. there are a few things you can do to speed up the process however. Lonestar College System has an extensive program on machining and machine program. I am actually currently in this program hoping to break the 30 dollar an hour mark as a result of having completed it. I would strongly recommend giving it a try for anyone who is interested.
One major downside to being a machinist is that it generally is viewed to take 10-12 years to become a "master machinist." this is very off putting to a lot of people but for many it makes the reward that much greater. once you get really good you will feel very proud due to the fact that there was so much you had to learn to get where you are. Also, the time put into mastering the trade is somewhat offset by how low the requirements for entry level positions are. Generally, the only requirement to get an entry level position (while low paying at first) is a highschool diploma. This site has entry level positions available with no experience required starting at 17 dollars an hour.
Things that you should know about being a machinist:
A very common misconception about being a machinist is that they generally do not make very much money this is very far from the truth. Glassdoor has the average salary of a machinist based on a 40 hr work week at just under 45k per year. There are also a plethora of job listings for over 30 dollars an hour and as high as 36 dollars an hour. at 36 dollars an hour and with 10 hours of over time per week ( which is to be expected, you are making right around 100k per year. one very good upside of this trade is that once you have mastered it, it is very easy to work for yourself. all you have to do is buy your own machine and find customers. at this point you can pay yourself or reinvest your money however you see fit.
